Aluminum ASI - Certification of Ten Alcoa Facilities
Editor: Nicole Kareta
Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) announced that Alcoa has been successfully certified against the ASI Chain of Custody Standard for ten of its operations, which cover the entire upstream value chain, from bauxite mining to aluminium smelting and casting operations.
The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminum value chain. The ASI Performance Standard defines environmental, social and governance principles and criteria, with the aim to address sustainability issues in the aluminum value chain. It sets out 59 criteria under the three sustainability pillars of Governance, Environment and Social, which address key issues such as biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples rights, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. The independent, third-party audits of Alcoa’s facilities were carried out by DNV GL.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “Alcoa is one of the founding members of ASI, and has played an active role in supporting ASI’s goal of responsible aluminum production and we congratulate the company on extending ASI Performance Standard Certification to an additional smelter and for their ASI Chain of Custody Certifications. Alcoa’s work to earn Chain of Custody Certification from bauxite mining through to smelting and casthouse operations gives a further boost to the potential global production of responsibly produced ASI Aluminium.”
“The certifications to the ASI Performance and Chain of Custody standards will offer our customers additional assurance of our commitment to responsible and sustainable production while complementing our existing SustanaTM line of aluminum products,” said Alcoa President and Chief Executive Officer Roy Harvey. “Today’s announcement aligns with our strategic priority to advance sustainably and it serves as another reinforcement of our strong reputation and industry leadership.”
