Digital Twin in the Automobile Industry
The revolutionary ‘digital twin’ technology has changed the dynamics of the automotive industry. Right from designing to development of futuristic vehicles in the most efficient and cost effective method is now possible via this technology.
With growing awareness on the benefits of the digital twin technology many industries are adopting the concept in their respective production lines and the automotive industry is no different. The automobile industry heavily invests in the development of new cars and with the assistance of this technology; engineers can create a virtual image of the vehicle which includes diverse elements such as the exterior of the car, its software, mechanics, electrics, and physical behaviour. This allows them to replicate and also validate each step of the development in order to identify problems and possible failures before the actual production process begins. The process also saves valuable time and money spent on the production process.
Digital twin is also used in electric vehicles. The e-cars can be paired with its digital twin. IoT sensors are installed on the vehicle so that the sensors can send or receive information from its digital twin. The data gathered from the sensors enables to keep a track of the working condition of the car and also detects problems early on in order to avoid expensive repairs. For instance, the American automobile company Tesla makes use of the digital twin application in each of its vehicles.
The software company Thinkwik states in an article that from minor to major real-time issues in Tesla Motors, the company fixes almost all the problems by simply downloading software updates. The constant transmission of the data between the vehicles through its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and Tesla factory helps improve the quality of Tesla products by each passing day. To sum up, the implementation of the Digital Twin together with machine learnings, artificial intelligence, internet of things and data science has made almost everything possible that was hard to imagine a decade ago.
Formula 1 Cars by Mc Laren
The technology is also being incorporated in racing cars. The British motor racing team, Mc Laren has installed numerous sensors into its Formula 1 racing cars which sends out data to its headquarters where the information is used to create a digital twin of the race car. Apart from the data sent by the sensors, the system also makes use of other available data such as weather, temperature, soil conditions and the digitally created car is then made to run the racecourse virtually. This process enables to carry out predictive analyses and assist the driver with information that will help him to perform better in the race.
The digital twin technology is also being explored to develop autonomous vehicles. Thus, the technology proves beneficial not only for today’s vehicles but also for cars of the future!
