InCeight Casting C8 Fit for the Future: New Platform for Interdisciplinary Exchange Around Cast Components

InCeight Casting is the congress that for the first time offers the overarching exchange of experience and knowledge of all disciplines involved in the product life cycle "cast component". The aim is to develop a common understanding of the various requirements for high-performance and efficient cast products.

The part diversity of cast components ranges from small components weighing less than one gram for medical technology and the electronics industry to rollers and press stands weighing several hundred tons. Lightweight design, sustainability, safety and cost efficiency are the attributes of cast products and production. But there are new challenges. For example, the pressure of internationalization of goods flows is causing prices to fall, and the desire for more digitalization is also challenging foundrymen and users to break new ground. Foundry trade associations recommend that those involved in the development process from industry and research act in a more networked manner, learn from each other and thus remain fit for the future.

The new virtual congress "InCeight Casting C8", which takes place in March 2-3, 2021, offers this interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and interests with in-depth technical presentations, workshops and panel discussions.

What would the world be without casting and the exploitation of its advantages for lightweight components adapted to the load case? No wind turbine would convert energy and no car or plane would reach its desired destination. As in many industries, digitalization in product development and production also requires foundrymen and users to break new ground and to be able to process and, above all, assess an increasing amount of measurement data. This requires the implementation of new thinking and implementation processes in foundries as well as casting users.

Foundry 4.0 Requires Thinking Outside the Box

Foundry 4.0, the pursuit of lean processes or the development of new casting materials always require a high level of research and development in all disciplines involved in the product development and value creation process. For the successive increase in the performance of cast components, it is valuable to look beyond one's own discipline. Because, just as the service life of a component depends to a large extent on its shape and material, it is crucial for product development and design to know the specific advantages of different casting materials as well as their properties so that they can be used effectively.

The German foundry industry is a leader in Europe and ranks fourth worldwide: In 2018, sales of all operations in Germany reached a new peak of EUR15.2 billion. More than 90 % of these companies are SMEs with up to five hundred employees, impressively demonstrating the performance of Germany's SME economy.

Virtual Exchange Supports SMEs

The "InCeight Casting C8" congress is intended to help consolidate this position and facilitate a targeted exchange between all disciplines involved in the product development process. The Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF in Darmstadt initiated this congress with a virtual exhibition. The Federal Association of the German Foundry Industry BDG, the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing DGZfP, Germanischer Lloyd Industrial Services GmbH, the German Engineering Federation VDMA and MAGMA Gießereitechnologie GmbH support this project.

The central objective of the congress is to create networks in order to gain a feeling for and understanding of each other's concerns, hardships and needs beyond one's own discipline in the design, dimensioning, simulation, casting or quality assurance of any component.

In-depth technical presentations, selected by a scientific program committee, on the topics of "Design and Product Development", "Foundry Technology", "Fatigue Strength" and "Non-destructive Testing" offer participants in-depth insights into what the latest developments in ultrasonic or X-ray testing have in store, or what strength increases thick-walled gravity die casting enables, and many other latest findings.
