Microdefects occur randomly during the casting process and determine the quality of castings. Within the framework of an AiF project, the Fraunhofer Institutes IFAM and IWM have developed a methodology to model these stochastic influences on the failure behavior of castings.
The German and European foundry industry is currently affected by several crises. Franz-Josef Wöstmann, Head of the Department for Early Technology Detection and Recycling, Fraunhofer IFAM and technical director of the "Forum Gießerei-Industrie", explains the current situation and points out important aspects which the industry must tackle now.
The dimensions of airplanes, container ships and other large scale products are too large and the quantities too small for classic serial production on the assembly line . Whether and with which methods production can nevertheless be automated will be discussed by the participants of the XXL-Products Working Group in Stade at the end of April.
