Global E-Mobility Market: China and Norway Ahead
China is the largest e-car market in the world in terms of unit numbers. However, it’s a much smaller country that leads in terms of market share. Germany is in the mid-table of the major markets but is catching up.
China remains the global growth market for e-mobility. Although the total number of new passenger car registrations in China has been falling for months, demand for electric cars continues to grow. According to data from the Center Automotive Management (CAM) in Bergisch-Gladbach, more than 600,000 pure battery cars and plug-in hybrids were registered during the first half of 2019, 52 % more than in the same period last year.
Increasing Number of Electric Vehicles in Germany
During the first six months, the second-largest e-automotive market was the USA with almost 150,000 new registrations and an increase of 20 %. Third place went to Germany, where 41 % more e-cars were registered than during the same period a year ago. The Federal Republic of Germany has thus replaced Norway as number three. More than 40,000 e-cars were sold in the e-car model country during the first half of the year, representing an increase of 22 %. France, Great Britain (27,000 units) and Holland (20,000 units) followed on the next positions.
Looking at the market share of e-cars, Norway clearly led with 56.2 %, followed by the Netherlands with 8.9 % and China with 5.1 %. Germany achieved 2.6 % on fourth place ahead of France (2.5 %), Great Britain (2.1 %) and the USA (1.8 %).
In four of the five major e-car markets, Tesla is among the top three best-selling e-cars in each market with at least one model. According to data from the EV-Sales portal, the Californian company is the second largest e-car manufacturer in the world, just behind BYD.
