The importance of structural castings for automotive parts has increased steadily in recent years and will continue to increase over the next years thanks to new car platforms brought about by the change from combustion engines to electric vehicles. In the past, structural castings were usually heat-treated in order to obtain the desired mechanical properties. Since heat treatment is a time-consuming and energy-consuming process, more and more attempts are being made to forgo heat treatment by using self-hardening alloys. In this lecture we show the points regarding release agents that have to be considered when changing to structural castings without heat treatment. In particular, we go into how the different types of release agents behave in the individual process steps and give an overview of the advantages and disadvantages.
