International Foundry Events Success for 60th International Foundry Conference in Portoroz

The 60th International Foundry Conference took place in Portoroz (Slovenia) from September 16 to 18, 2020. Besides a good organization with interesting lectures the great international participation contributed to the success of the event.

The motto of the traditional meeting of foundry experts was "Tradition and Future". The aim was to focus on the outstanding tradition of foundries, which is at the same time shaped by rapid scientific and technical developments and therefore has a great future. The main organizer of the conference was the Slovenian Foundrymen Society, which cooperates with the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Science and Engineering and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Maribor.

The 60th anniversary of the International Foundry Conference was attended by 172 participants from 12 different countries - in times of the Corona pandemic this can be seen as a proof of respect for one of the oldest foundry conferences in the world. In addition, Slovenia is leading by criteria 95 kg of produced castings by resident yearly.

A total of 10 plenary lectures, 12 lectures on cast iron and casting technology and 11 lectures on non-ferrous alloys were held at the conference. In addition, there were 41 presentations on broad foundry topics ranging from research and materials testing, new technological solutions, development standpoints, digitization of processes and technological procedures to additive technologies and circular economy, as well as 8 poster presentations. The Foundry Conference was also accompanied by a foundry exhibition with presentations from 26 companies.

The President of the Slovenian Foundrymen Society and the Organizing Committee of IFC Portoroz, MSc. Mirjam Jan-Blazic, held an opening speech, in which she highlighted the tradition of the Slovenian Foundrymen Society, its importance for the growth of the foundry, 67 years of publishing the Slovenian trade magazine Livarski vestnik and many cooperations with other foreign associations. The speech was followed by the award ceremony - Medals of the Slovenian Foundrymen Society as a special recognition of the cooperation and contributions to the quality growth of this international conference, to which it was awarded:

  • Emeritus. Prof. Dr. mont. Alojz Križman University of Maribor, Edidot-in-Chief of Livarski vestnik and President of the Scientific Committee of IFC Portorož
  • MSc. Martin Debelak, Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and long-time secretary of the Slovenian Foundry Society

The Slovenian Foundrymen Society is already preparing the 61st IFC Portoroz 2021, that will take place from September 15 to 17, 2021.
