Metav 2018 The Trade Fair for Production Technology
The 20th Metav 2018, the trade fair for metalworking technologies, will take place in Düsseldorf from February 20 to 24, 2018. Metav's core topics are traditional subjects of the metalworking industry, such as machine tools, manufacturing systems, precision tools, automated material flow, computer technology, industrial electronics, and accessories.
Traditional metalworking and innovation are no contradiction at Metav. The show presents both the latest technologies in traditional manufacturing techniques and current Industry 4.0 solutions. Key topics address numerous user industries, including the automotive and supplier industries, mechanical engineering, medical technology and aircraft construction, electrical engineering and electronics, as well as the iron, sheet metal and metal processing industries.
This core of the trade fair is connected in many ways with the so-called Areas, which have been successfully introduced as a part of the new Metav concept in 2016. Therefore, the fair mirrors the reality of contemporary industrial production in compressed form on its premises. Two areas are dedicated to special topics of production technology, two others have special industries in focus.
Areas Represent Synergies in Production Technology
The Quality Area shows how inseparable measuring technology is from industrial production. In the age of digital transformation, quality assurance is becoming even more important. Finally, measurement and testing technology is becoming the pillar of Smart and Big Data concepts.
The Additive Manufacturing Area, on the other hand, clearly shows that corresponding manufacturing processes have established a firm place in factories. They are an excellent addition to classic metalworking processes and fit perfectly into the entire process chain — although mechanical finishing is still always required. This is illustrated not least by the numerous exhibitors who opt for hybrid machines — i. e. production technology that combines additive manufacturing with machining.
In the Molding Area everything revolves around tool, mold and model making. Molding is one of the most demanding applications in metalworking. The demands on precision and quality are extremely high, which drives innovation in this area: In addition to conventional processes, new process technologies such as laser-assisted manufacturing for the fine structuring of design surfaces are being used. Which requirements need to be met and which innovative production technology is most suitable for it, is therefore a major topic at the Molding Area.
The Medical Area is the second user-oriented area and focuses on medical technology. With its high demands and enormous potential for innovation, this sector is the driving force behind technological progress in manufacturing technology. It is not without reason that medical technology occupies leading positions in the number of globally registered patents. On the other hand, it is a segment with excellent long-term market prospects. The demographic development of the world's population is fueling demand, especially the rising average age in the industrialized countries and the rising standard of living in numerous emerging markets.
A Strong Innovation Centre in the German Northwest
The Metav 2018 is positioning itself as the location for production solutions at the Düsseldorf site in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, one of the most concentrated industrial economic areas in Europe. Mechanical engineering in particular is traditionally strong here. This industry employs more than 200,000 people in North Rhine-Westphalia, making it the largest industrial employer in the state. Companies in North Rhine-Westphalia account for almost one-fifth of Germany's mechanical engineering turnover. However, Metav is not only an attractive and convenient meeting place for manufacturers and users in the region, but also for neighboring Benelux countries and nearby Scandinavian countries. At the same, time visitor quality is high: In 2016, 63 % of them stated that they had an influence on procurement decisions.
Metav Hits the Nerve of Users
Today, more than ever, industry thrives on innovation. Digital transformation has accelerated the innovation cycles faster than anyone could have imagined a generation ago. For this reason, the companies' pioneering mindset is rapidly becoming obsolete: anyone who wants to be at the forefront of technology today depends on unleashing the innovative potential of the entire workforce. Employees must act and think in a technologically up-to-date manner. Those who still regard innovation as the exclusive task of the executive board could soon catch up with the reality of the markets. It is therefore important to anchor skills and a feeling for technological trends in the factory halls. This is also an aspect where Metav can score points. Almost 40 % of the visitors come from the areas of manufacturing, production or quality control. In this way, exhibitors also can speak directly to the users of their solutions in the companies — and their assessment and experience will undoubtedly have a noticeable effect on the purchasing decision made by many companies.
Metav: Close to the Market, Close to Innovation
Metav covers a wide range of aspects relevant for production technology. Its core themes remain to comprise the entire spectrum of metalworking, an area that has once again gained considerable potential for innovation thanks to the digital transformation. At the same time, Metav shows the correlations with numerous adjacent industrial topics that have an impact on the production technology. This comes at a time when industry 4.0 is driving us to approach value creation more comprehensively, consistently and networked.
The Metav 2018 as a showcase for innovation is not limited to the exhibitors but offers a comprehensive information program covering all aspects of production technology.
